With a new season come fresh new books offering knitting inspiration. Whether you're drawn to vintage aesthetics, contemporary designs, or stylish accessories, there's something in store for you in this season’s lineup. Here’s a look at some of the most exciting knitting books coming out this spring!
From Vintage...
The first two books are all about achieving a vintage look with modern patterns.
Linda Ivell specializes in making historical knitwear patterns approachable to modern hand knitters. Her first book, Timeless Tyrolean Knitwear, was released two years ago and made an appearance on the Winter 2023 new books list. Her new title, Recreating Vintage 1940s Knitwear: Celebrating the Ingenuity of the Make-Do Spirit, offers 18 patterns inspired by the 1940s, recreating and resizing vintage patterns for contemporary yarns and notions while still focusing on the frugality of wartime knitting.
Vintage patterns often come in very limited size ranges so adapting them to contemporary size-inclusivity standards is a challenge. A particularly interesting aspect about Ivell's book is her ground-breaking new solution for re-sizing any vintage pattern to be inclusive.
Details on the book are hazy at this point — Amazon can't even get the author's name right — but according to Ivell's Instagram, Recreating Vintage 1940s Knitwear is set to come out in May 2025.
Norwegian knitwear designer Helene Arnesen of Fabel Knitwear is known for her unique retro-look garment designs that wouldn't be out of place in a period drama set in the war years. Her designs have hitherto been available as digital patterns but that's about to change with her first published book, Romantic Knits.
Fill your wardrobe with breathtaking handmade pieces that you will treasure for years to come. Knitwear designer Helene Arnesen is a master in combining simple knitting techniques with elegant details, such as billowing sleeves, ribbon ties and lace edging, to capture the romantic essence of vintage fashion. More than just a collection of practical patterns, this thoughtfully and artistically crafted book will evoke inspiration and delight with each turn of the page. With Helene, a world of beautiful feminine charm is only a knit purl away.
Romantic Knits: 16 Knitting Patterns for Blouses, Cardigans and Other Elegant Knitwear is already out: it was released on March 4, 2025.
To Modern...
The next three books update traditional techniques and styles for more contemporary aesthetics.
Hailing from Sweden, Marita Clementz reimagines traditional Nordic designs with bright, contemporary colors and modern shapes in Knit Modern Scandi Sweaters: Knitting Patterns for Bright and Beautiful Nordic Knits.
Author Marita Clementz was inspired to design her bright, colourful sweaters when she couldn't find any knitting patterns that featured the kind of designs she was looking for. She has taken the concept of the traditional Scandinavian sweater and given it a fresh new look by using her own beautiful patterns and colours to make gorgeous sweaters that are as warm and snuggly as the traditional versions but look very contemporary. Marita is based in Sweden and as well as knitting she loves to go hiking. This collection of designs has been inspired by nature with its organic shapes and motifs including large flower blooms. The colour choices have also been inspired by the natural world with combinations influenced by the midnight sun in Sweden and midsummer flower meadows.
The book includes 12 unisex, size-inclusive, top-down sweater designs that are all worked in the round with a loose fit. Knit Modern Scandi Sweaters will be released on March 18, 2025.
Andrea Brauneis' book Fair Isle Fashion Knits is also about an updated take on a classic colorwork style. Many colorwork designs published in the past few years have placed colorwork only on a small section of the garment, such as on the yoke in lopapeysa-style sweaters and on the hem for easy, in-the-round knitting. This book, on the other hand, ups the ante with all-over, full-garment stranded designs.
Instead of restricting stranded knitting to only the yoke of a sweater, the 17 patterns in this collection embrace colorwork from top to bottom. Modern and traditional motifs are used in new ways to create an array of styles and shapes, from cardigans, hoodies, and short sleeve sweaters to cozy pullovers, ponchos, and even a dress. A variety of colorful yarns are used to varying effects: mohair for soft halos, merino wool for stitch definition, and alpaca for lightweight warmth. The sweaters are unique and sure to be noticed, yet are comfortable and appropriate for everyday wear.
Fair Isle Fashion Knits is an English translation of original German, Nordische Pullover Stricken, published in 2023. While some of the designs are very Fair Isle inspired, such as the Geillis dress, in general "Fair Isle" in the title seems not to refer to the traditional colorwork style hailing from the Shetland Islands but is instead used to describe stranded knitting in general. The 17 designs included are not size inclusive, either: the patterns in the book only come in four sizes, ranging from small to extra large.
Fair Isle Fashion Knits: 17 Top-Down Designs in Allover Stranded Colorwork Patterns has also been released on March 4.
From colorwork to something more spring-y! Spring and summer knitting can be just as rewarding as winter projects, and Joan Ho proves it with airy, feminine garments. Light & Breezy Knitwear: 15 Modern Patterns for Tanks, Tees, Skirts & Other Warm-Weather Garments includes 15 size-inclusive patterns for the warmer weather.

And Accessories in Between
Smaller projects like hats, socks, mittens, and shawls make for great spring and summer knitting and that's what these last two books are all about.
Laine's newest pattern book, 52 Weeks of Accessories, is the sixth one in the 52 Weeks series. As always, this collection offers 52 original patterns by designers from all over the globe. With a mix of both beginner-friendly and advanced designs, this book is a treasure trove for knitters who love small but impactful pieces.
52 Weeks of Accessories is a beautiful collection of 52 patterns to create cozy accessories – mostly knits but also including some crochet pieces – and was created by 48 international designers. It is a great companion for those who love knitting hats, shawls, socks and mittens, but also includes some more fashion-forward projects like cowls, hoods, headbands and bags. The projects range in suitability from beginners to experienced knitters, and feature an array of techniques including cables and colorwork as well as simpler stitches. Thanks to their small size, accessories are the perfect starting point for those interested in trying out knitting and playing with yarn.
52 Weeks of Accessories: Beautiful Patterns for Year-round Knitting comes out on April 22, 2025. Keep your eyes peeled for the inevitable errata.
Bringing a Japanese twist to classic accessories, Yoko Hatta's Small Knits features 19 patterns for mittens, socks, shawls, cowls, and more. This book makes for a great introduction to reading Japanese knitting patterns which rely heavily on charts or schematics and written instructions are sparse (or even non-existent).
With a contemporary approach to traditional knitting patterns and textures, Small Knits brings to life a collection of stylish necessities for warmth and fashion. From Selbu mittens to unisex hats and neck warmers—these pieces work for just about any mood, recipient and wardrobe. Instructions, diagrams and Japanese-style knitting charts take you through each project from start to finish. A section on technique shows how to execute the stitches used in this book. These projects are fun and rewarding for experienced knitters who've enjoyed a taste of the Japanese knitting style or would like to give it a try.
Small Knits: Casual & Chic Japanese Style Accessories will be released on May 27, 2025.
