New Knitting Books for Winter 2025

It seems as if all book publishers focused on pushing out their new knitting books in the fall and left only a few crumbs for the early months of 2025. But not all is lost: there are still a few exciting new releases to look forward to. From sustainable crafting to matching outfits for you and your furry friend, here are five new upcoming titles worth having a second look.

It's a Dog Knit Dog World

The first thing I noticed on the shorter-than-usual list of upcoming knitting books on Amazon is titles focusing on knits focusing on pets, dogs in particular.

Knits for You and Your Dog: 10 Sweater Designs to Make for You and Your Pet (Quadrille 2025).

Love braving the winter weather with your canine companion? Knits for You and Your Dog: 10 Sweater Designs to Make for You and Your Pet offers ten matching sweater designs for both you and your furry friend. The book is a collaboration by nine renowned Finnish designers, such as Merja Ojanperä and Pirjo Iivonen, and one from Iceland, the master of lopapeysa Védís Jónsdóttir.

Dogs are a human’s best friend so why not dress like each other! Knits for you and Your Dog is the ultimate knitting book, featuring 10 matching sweater designs to keep you and your loyal companion cosy and stylish in those harsh winter months.

All designs in Knits for You and Your Dog feature some form of colorwork.

The size range for the human sweaters varies from pattern to pattern. Some are size inclusive, ranging from XS to 4XL, while others are offered in as little as four sizes (XS to XL). The doggy patterns come in even fewer sizes: up to three or in some cases one size only. A little more effort could have been put into harmonizing the size range across all patterns.

While the book description touts that the sweaters come in a range of styles, all designs feature some form of colorwork. As said, the size options are not very extensive either but you can mix and match designs, hopefully finding something suitable both for you and your pet.

Knits for You and Your Dog also features cat sweaters... whether they like it or not.

Cat lovers need not despair! The book also contains variations for our feline overlords. Knits for You and Your Dog comes out on February 25, 2025.

This next book takes pet enthusiasm to the next level: knitting with dog hair!

Shed happens! Don’t clog up your vacuum cleaner―turn that fuzz into fabulous fashions with this complete guide. Recycle Rover into treasured mementos of your beloved pet.

Knitting with Dog Hair: Better a Sweater from a Dog You Know and Love Than from a Sheep You'll Never Meet by Kendall Crolius is an expanded edition of the original published in 1994. Chapter by chapter, the book walks you through the steps of turning your beloved pet into knits: how to collect and store dog fur, how to spin it into yarn and then dye said yarn, and how to use pet-spun yarn in knitting and other yarny craft projects. The breed guides in the 21st-century version have been updated to include modern "designer dogs" (ugh).

Again, cat lovers need not despair: the book also has a chapter entitled "Special Harvesting Instructions for Cats". As a cat owner, I don't know whether to be grateful or terrified.

Marketed as "a perfect gift book for all occasions", Knitting with Dog Hair was released on December 3, 2024. Something for your Christmas wish list?

Margaret Holzmann's Iconic Knit Blankets and More: 30+ Graphic Patterns for Blankets, Pillows, Tops, and Table Runners (Stackpole Books 2024).

Grouping this next book in with the canine theme is a bit of a (puppy) stretch but it does feature dogs in some capacity...

Margaret Holzmann is known for her bold and graphic blanket designs. Her previous books include the popular Geometric Knit Blankets (Stackpole Books 2021) and the self-published Safe at Home: Blankets to Celebrate our Favorite Things (2022). Now she's back with even more blankets in Margaret Holzmann's Iconic Knit Blankets and More.

Margaret Holzmann, author of the wildly popular Geometric Knit Blankets, is back, this time with themed designs featuring cats, dogs, houses, Christmas trees and candy canes, among other highly graphic, colorful designs. 30+ patterns for blankets and pillows, plus table runners and tops featuring icons from the blanket designs — all in Margaret’s signature style.

Both cat and dog lovers are covered with such patterns as Stay Paw-sitive (featured on the cover) and More Than a Feline. The book also features blanket designs for birds, fish, beach scenes, and cityscapes in Holzmann's instantly recognizable high-contrast style. Launched on December 3, 2024, Iconic Knit Blankets and More is already available.

Scraptastic Knits

Zero waste patterns and sustainable crafting have been a trend for some time. With the economy being in a downturn, it's also smart to look for ways to save on knitting supplies and tools. Erica Berntsen's book Knitting Stylish Stuff from Your Stash hits this nerve.

Knitting lovers around the world want to know: how can you sate the knitting habit without wasting yarn? Knitting Stylish Stuff from Your Stash is author Erica Berntsen's answer! With tens of thousands of followers on TikTok and Instagram, Berntsen regularly updates her audience with tips for making the most out of each skein of yarn — sometimes, with zero waste. This book offers yarn storage tips to ensure that you not only get the most out of every inch of yarn, but that you don't lose out on all the creative knitting possibilities along the way. Fashion original sweaters, jackets, tops, and tote bags out of your old skeins of yarn.

Originally published in Norwegian as Strikk med Restegarn, the book features 20 original patterns for garments and accessories, all designed for using what you have on hand rather than buying new yarn. Berntsen ascribes to the pattern-numbering convention that many Scandi knitfluencer-designers use but (thankfully) the designs have been given more descriptive names in the English version. Which would you rather knit: Zero Waste No. 7 or Starry Night Cardigan?

In addition to creative ways for stashbusting and utilizing even the tiniest scraps of existing yarn, the book also offers tips on re-purposing and unraveling old knits. Knitting Stylish Stuff from Your Stash is set to come out on February 25, 2025.

Everything's Coming up Roses

Another big trend in recent years has been bobbles, embroidery, and other embellishments in knitwear. Japanese author Hiroko Ibuki's book Knitted Flowers provides a way to add a bit of cottagecore to your knits.

Knitted Flowers: 100 Cute Flower and Fruit Motifs by Hiroko Ibuki (Tuva Publishing 2025).

This comprehensive guide features 100 cute and colorful stitch patterns for flowers, fruits, borders, and more. Also included are detailed step-by-step instructions, vibrant photography, and patterns for cardigans, shawls, bags and home décor featuring Ibuki's flowery designs.

Knitted Flowers: 100 Cute Flower and Fruit Motifs is released on February 1, 2025.
